Perry has always done excellent PPC work - and I got this email in from him this morning - I Print it here in full but do me a favor and if you like this - go join Perrys List and get this info direct from the source!

Ed,

Got this email from John, a very astute Roundtable member (he was "Mr. Fishmonger" on my interview with four Intensive grads at http://www.perrymarshall.com/adwords/roundtable):

~~~
Perry,
Over the past couple of weeks, I have been trying to increase my overall
search campaign CTR (which is +3%!) by continuously pausing the high
impression- low CTR keywords from my campaigns. I figured: OK, take out
the dogs that are not a good match for my market, and shoot for 6%, just
to see if I can do it.
What I have found is, I can't do it, no matter how many .5% or less high
impression keywords I cut.
I am still in the 3-4% range.
My theory: Broad Match Keywords are the cause.
Since Google is loosening it's standards, our broad match keywords are
showing up more and more to the unwashed masses, where they are less
relevant, in order for them to keep their click income up. It's like they
are taking our search keyword campaigns, and throwing them into the
content network.
The more keywords you have in a broad match long tail, the easier it is
for Google to justify doing this.
I am going to pause my broad keywords completely in some of my campaigns
to test it.
Any other theories???
John
~~~

John,

I think that is a very sound theory actually. I should blog about this.... I can't think of any other explanation.

Strategy, then:

Broad match in a separate ad group. Makes a lot of sense actually.....

Perry

~~~
Perry,
Early test results show that we were right. CTR is soaring on the exact
and phrase match words. Some broad match keywords have a very high CTR,
while the rest tank.
Google Broad Match = The new Content Network-rebranded, since they weren't
able to make that fly the way they intended to.
Here's to the poor unsuspecting fools out there who are making Google rich.
Talk to you later today...
John
~~~

So let me explain.

The big advertising spenders are spending less with Google. But Google can still hit their revenue targets by making adjustments to their ad formula.

The best way for them to do this is with BROAD MATCH keywords. All they have to do is tweak a number somewhere in their engine and ads will show up more easily for terms that don't match.

So for example let's say you sell red wagons.

Smart advertisers bid on

[red wagon] (exact match only)
"red wagon" (ad shows only for queries that contain this phrase)
red wagon (ad could show for "red toyota station wagon" or any number of other unrelated searches)

Then they watch conversion rates and adjust bids accordingly, to make sure their ROI is solid.

Most people just bid on

red wagon (broad match)

And they get all those kinds of traffic mixed together.

So if Google lowers the quality threshold to get more exposures and clicks, they win and you lose.

I'm telling you, you've got to follow my system and you've got to sleep with one eye open.

Now... let me tell you what this means for Google.

AdGooRoo.com monitors millions of search engine results and they are noting a 54% growth in Google's "first page advertisers" - see http://www.adgooroo.com/blog/ for their full report. They very well may be poised for a record quarter for Q4 2008. That's what I'm predicting.

In any case, Google very much has control of their destiny. But you'd better make sure you're on top of your conversion numbers!

About Managing your Ad Campaigns...

For years I've been saying, managing Google campaigns is one of the hardest things to outsource. It looks like it would be easy, but those Google ads are sooooo close to your customers, it's so intimately intertwined with your core marketing mission, it is VERY difficult to outsource this. The only way to learn to play this game like a true expert is to learn on your own dime.

I got word from another Roundtable member, Jeff Hughes - he went through my very first Bobsled Run in 2005:

He says, "We are currently spending over $200,000/month per month profitably within just Adwords. We easily spend $50,000 per week."

Jeff has really cracked the code on PPC management and he teamed up with Glenn Livingston to form a PPC management company. They are the first company that I've ever been willing to publicly endorse for doing this absolutely mission-critical job for you.

If you think you're too busy to master AdWords, think again. But if you HAVE achieved a level of mastery (that is a requirement by the way) and now you wish to have experts take over the controls, refine what you are doing and keep an eye on the meter for you, I suggest you schedule an interview with Glenn Livingston.

http://www.LivingstonPPC.com/

Stay Sharp.

Perry Marshall

P.S.: If you closely monitor YOUR AdWords campaigns and have observations / experiences about recent Quality Score and Broad Match thresholds, post your comments on my blog at

Search engines may think www.tubbynerd.com and tubbynerd.com are two different sites.You should set up a permanent redirect (technically called a "301 redirect") between these sites. Once you do that, you will get full search engine credit for your work on these sites.

For example, www.tubbynerd.com seems to have 3,371 inbound links whereas tubbynerd.com has 5,931 inbound links. By correctly configuring a permanent 301 redirect, the search rankings might improve as all inbound links are correctly counted for the website."

Anyway, I didn't want to be investigative, but if that was helpful, I have the feeling of giving at least a tiny little bit of all I got from him and all of you back.

As I write this Stockmarkets around the world have popped up pretty significantly.

Phew, Glad THATS over... (Hah - I let this sit for a day and of course the markets have plunged again!)

But it's not really, I mean today is really no different to yesterday, the same opportunities and obstacles you face are still their but if you have CNN/Foxnews/Name your paper and your obsessing over every piece of news (BTW Note to you - Stop doing that!) you'll think the world is now a happier place.

Call this the Manic in manic depression phase...

It doesn't annoy me at all - and don't worry I'm not so zen that I can watch the market tumble like that and think about it

That's natural...

Question is - what do we do about it. What's a useful thing to obsess over (I'm all for obsessing - it just needs to be useful!) I had been thinking about this all weekend. What can you do that will make a useful impact. If the world is entering a tough economic phase what can you do...

Control And The Lack Of It

I really don't want to go all woo-woo in the blog - but something that I try to work out is what stauff I have control over and what stuff I DONT CONTROL.

As much as my "master of the universe" self image allows - incredibly there is not a single thing I can do to influence the market. ( And hey - I tried check out this post on Warren Buffet and John Mayer during the hight of the panic).

So anything useful to do must be something in your control. It's a really hard thing to learn - you can control the process - it's very hard to control the outcome (John Mayer touched on that in his awesome lecture)

So...I'm going to see if I can suggest a few of the things that you can do (and I can do too...)

Are you ready for the first one...

It's a beauty....

Here it comes...

MOVE!

Ok _ I can tell your stunned by this insight but I can tell you the single best thing you can do to cope with everything is to get of your (hopefully) comfy seat, get your but out the door and use what ever faculty you have to MOVE

Thirty Minutes of Walking is going to make you feel better and it's going to help you cope with anything that comes your way. As you sit reading this, 95% of you (the other 5% are yoga instructors) are in a posture that is just perfect for you get depressed.

I'm serious.

Look - the science of physiology (aka how you hold yourself, your posture) is wide, deep and well established. This is not new-age Tony-Robbins, NLP voodoo - Read John Medina's wonderful book "Brain Rules" there is a heap of science that backs this up

It's funny Gary Halbert always used to insist on going for walks prior to doing copywriting, Steve Jobs often walks when he is taking key decisions - He did the deal to return to Apple while Taking a walk with Gil Amelio.

Now I have a confession - I HATE to walk, but after reading Brain Rules I relised that my lack of moving was really imperaing my ability to do waht needs to be done.

Many years ago I listened to a Tony Robbins tape and I remember this great series of questions he used to ask about any unpleasent task.

The cliff-note version is this question - What can I do to make this thing that SUCKS actually be something that non-sucks...

It's a really powerful question - For me to jazz up the walk - The thing that turns it from suck to non-suck is listening to podcasts. (Podcasts are a whole new topic and something that you MUST get your head around!) - This way I ckeep up with what's going on in my area of interests.

In fact I currently listen to these podcasts - most are weekly so that I can rack up a few and go through them.

(note-to-self - create a post with my favourite podcasts!)

While I'm writing - like right now - I can't listen to podcasts so I use the AWESOME genius function on iTunes to pick songs with the feel I'm going for.

Going for a walk (or whatever you are capable of doing that is physical) has huge benefits.

If you are not a walker - try to do one half an hour walk this week.

If you ever get really tough news or someone gives you the royal shaft - going fo r a walk is the single best thing you can do.

Mental block - Go for a walk
Procrastinating - Go for a walk (Hey at least you'll get fitter!)
Can't get the Pentatonic Scale at 75bpm - Find a new Instrument - actually go for a walk...

I am so far south of a fitness freak I can't tell you - but MOVING will actually make you a better Marketer.

Ed

PS For walking substitute any physcal activity that you can do for thirty minutes...

It's true I have Man Love for Merlin Mann, rather than go on about how good he is, which he would A)hate and B)deride I thought I'd put up this video

Now Merlin has a vicious sense of humor and his language is "colorful" but boy oh boy is this presentation SO WORTH IT.

It gets started about 5minutes and 20secs in

To paraphrase Jack Nicholson "Merlin makes me want to be a better blogger/podcaster/communicator"

Enjoy

Ed

PS Merlin has a podcast called "You Look Nice Today..." - It is without doubt the funniest podcast I listen to BUT I have a very sick sense of humor - It carries an iTunes "explicit" tag and on occasions truly earns that title
