The Day The Marketing Died

I cannot believe it…

Gary Halbert is Dead

Some times I hate the Internet and I hate time zones

Today started so well for me - The Lab have come up with this
amazing system and we were workshoping the whole day - I had my
phone off.

At about 5pm in Australia -Rob Somerville checked bloglines and saw
a post from Brad Fallon

It said Gary Halbert had died.

I thought it was a joke - some sick Internet Joke,  and as it had
gone past midnight on the pacific and 3am in the morning on the
east coast I was trying to figure out if it was true.

Sadly, John Reese (who never sleeps) was awake and was able to
confirm it for me.

You see Gary was like a second father to me. Without him I would just
be some punk from the other side of the world trying to figure out
the direct marketing game.

You know - I would prefer to do a video tribute - But Gary used to
hate those.

No the Prince of Print - deserves a written send off and one that I
am to upset to write just now.

So today - as we go about our Marketing lives - I’ll ask you to
stop and think of Gary today. His impact on direct marketing will
last many lifetimes.

His impact on me was so much more than that.

I can’t believe he is gone.

Ed

What a shock!! There’s going to be a herd of sad shitweasels wandering about today. At least he won’t have to listen to people asking him if he’s the Rich Jerk any more!

  2. Gary evidently meant alot to you Ed.
Sorry to hear about this and equally the rather turbulent start to the year you had.
It curious that at times like these one can only think it cliches, but I think Gary’s legacy is safe in the mind of all those ‘punks’ he touched and inspired, with his intrepidity, creativity, insight, wit and earnest goodwill.

And don’t worry, to me you still are ‘just
be some punk from the other side of the world’ ;)

    Be well.

  3. What shocking news!

I read that he died in his sleep which is the most peaceful way to go.

Ed - my heart goes out to you - as losing someone who feels like your second Dad is heart wrenching.

May Gary rest in peace - he has definitely left a legacy - his work was done.

Take care of yourself & thank you for your lovely email and post in his honour.

    Caro :-)

    Dear Ed,

What very sad news! I am so very sorry for your loss.

Caro nailed my feelings in thoughts and words.

I’d just like to add my thanks to you for having Gary speak at our Conference in San Diego last September. I feel honored and privileged to have heard his ideas and meet the man. What a character! What a genius!

My heart goes out to all of his family and friends.

    Sincerely,

    Linda

[…] I heard about it a little earlier this week via Ed Dale's Blog. And although I never met Gary Halbert personally, I feel saddened about his death. It seems that all the good marketers are dying too soon - although he was much older than Internet pioneer Corey Rudl, president of the Internet Marketing Center who passed away in 2005 at age 34 because of a fatal car crash on a race track.
